Classification of Diamond Tools

Jun. 29, 2021
Share:

Diamond Tools, such as diamond wheels, are primarily used in cutting applications that require higher strength than conventional cutting devices. Diamond particles are attached to the operating parts of the tool through the use of a binder. Diamond is known to be a superhard material that offers several comparative advantages over tools that use more common abrasive materials such as silicon carbide.

What are the advantages of using diamond tools?

When diamond is used for grinding applications, it offers many advantages over more commonly used abrasive materials. Diamond Bits are known to be one of the hardest materials on the planet. When used as an abrasive material for cutting applications, such as diamond wheels, it offers excellent strength, solid durability, wear resistance and a low coefficient of friction.

How do we classify diamond tools?

Diamond tools are classified according to the manufacturing application or type of bond. The following are common classifications of diamond tools, by application.

Metal Bonded

The bonding agent used is a sintered metal which holds the diamond grit. The operational aspect of the tool is the diamond segment

Examples of metal bonded diamond tools can include diamond blades, diamond wheels, diamond core bits, etc.

Resin bonded

The bonding agent used is mainly resin powder

An example of a resin-bonded tool is a diamond polishing pad.

Electroplated

The diamond is fixed to the base of the tool by electroplating or chemical vapor deposition.

Ceramic-bonded

The bonding agent used is a combination of glass and ceramic powders

The tool has the advantage of excellent chemical stability and reduced elastic deformation

Polycrystalline diamond

Bonded by sintering tiny size diamonds at higher temperatures and pressures

Benefits include solid fracture toughness and durability, and solid thermal stability

Polycrystalline diamond bonds

Bonding by combining polycrystalline diamond with carbide layers at higher temperature and pressure levels.

Benefits include solid wear resistance and toughness

High Temperature Brazing

The diamond is bonded to the tool by solder at extremely high temperatures.

The solder holds the diamond firmly in place, with a single layer of diamond reaching almost 80% of its size.
